Rain dodging again

Saturday 15 June

Last night it was doubtful if any work on Culvert 11A would get done today, however, the level had subsided a bit by this morning and that allowed Michael to get some more bricks into the south wall of the channel. The weather wasn't brilliant but the heavy showers managed to keep away until lunchtime. With Roger and Stuart still away on the First Aid course it left Alastair and Dave to make up the team for Stanton.

The morning's first task was to bring some gabion stone up from Winchcombe, this will augment the supply being purchased for the baskets to be installed on the down side replacing the sleepers at the end of the wing wall.

Next off was a quick check of the water level in the culvert, it had gone down just enough to allow more bricks to be laid. The flood had washed more of the stones out the culvert, that will save us spending more time extracting them.

Progress for the day

With the heavy showers blowing in, work was abandoned a bit earlier than usual. This was more progress than expected; an all round good show.

Last off was a quick look at the River Isbourne, Culvert 21A, just to see if there was any sign of further erosion following the heavy rains. The vegetation has grown so much that it's hard to see anything, but there is no sign of new ground slipping into the river.

  1. Thanks for the up-date again (I is hoping for a report from Broadway on the P2 footbridge!?). Can you clarify some detail about the "taper" bricks? Along which edge of the brick are they tapered and are they set to face the away from the culvert and facing the (soon to be covered) land drain? and how do they fit with the "headers" Just out of interest. Most interesting blog this.

  2. Best place for Broadway footbridge news is Jo's Extension blog:

although it occasionally shows up in other places (e.g. the Broadway Station Maintenance blog) as well.

  3. Thank you Noel, I just visited today back at 5 (I have to get back for my Downs son) I could see that the dagger boards for p2 had been primered and the first section of iron sheets fixed. You are doing a wonderful job there and if I lived closer I would get there twice a week, it has just taken nearly 2 hours to get back with all the "stop go" systems on the roads and then the motorways crawling at 10 mph.
